Exploring the Cutting Edge of AI in Hull
Data Stream UK’s founder and managing director, Elliot Fearn, recently delivered a highly technical and insightful session as part of “The Tech Sessions” in Hull. This event provided local developers, data engineers, and technology enthusiasts with a deep dive into the advanced techniques involved in building and deploying Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-based Large Language Models (LLMs).
A Hands-on Approach to AI
Elliot’s session, titled “Building a RAG-Based LLM with Vector Databases: A Technical Deep Dive,” guided attendees step-by-step through creating sophisticated AI systems. He explored the technical architecture of RAG-based LLMs, demonstrated practical use-cases, and highlighted essential tools such as LangChain and Astra DB for developing robust, queryable AI applications.
A key focus of the session was clarifying the fundamental differences between standard LLMs and RAG-based LLMs. Standard LLMs typically rely solely on pre-trained knowledge, which limits their ability to provide specific, current, or contextually relevant information. In contrast, RAG-based LLMs integrate external databases, allowing real-time retrieval of relevant information. This approach addresses the common business challenge of providing accurate, context-sensitive responses, greatly enhancing the AI’s utility.
The problem businesses face with standard LLMs is their restricted accuracy and limited domain-specific knowledge. RAG-based models solve this issue by dynamically accessing external data sources through vector databases, thereby significantly improving the precision, reliability, and usefulness of the model’s outputs. Consequently, this ensures businesses can leverage tailored insights, make informed decisions, and provide highly personalized customer interactions.
Participants gained practical knowledge on:
- Designing efficient retrieval systems using vector databases
- Implementing LangChain for streamlined AI development
- Leveraging Astra DB for scalable vector search operations
- Best practices in optimizing and deploying production-ready AI models
